Queen of the Arabian Sea, one of the upcoming metros in South India, major commercial hub - all these are just some of the terms used to describe Kochi, commercial capital of Kerala. The city of Kochi, (called Cochin earlier) is home to commercial establishments, malls, Jewish settlements and Technology Parks. In this city, the old meets the new and whether you are looking for mall culture, backwater experience or even go to live musical events, Kochi has it all.
And now, the city of Kochi has another reason to celebrate, Kochi has been one of the two teams in 2010 that have been allotted a team in the IPL! The Indian Premier League (IPL) was started by the Board of Cricket Control in India (BCCI) in 2008 with much fanfare and following to boost domestic cricket. The game concept is similar to the National Basketball League and English Premier League. The fan base and followers of this game ensured that this became one of the biggest event in Cricket this decade.
The Kochi IPL team was announce in March of 2010 and the bidding was won by Rendezvous Sports Pvt. Ltd. at a whopping USD 333.33 million. The other team which was won by Sahara Group, a major business house for the city of Pune. These two new teams will join the current 8 teams in 2011 to make IPL Season 4 a 10 team affair.
The BCCI has also announced its plans to create a world class stadium in Kochi which will play host to the IPL Twenty20 in 2011. The tournament has a large religious following across the globe with people travelling into the country just to catch their favourite team in action in different stadiums. This will not only bring cheers to the hospitality industry in Cochin and surrounding places, but also to those within the travel industry.
